Bosch Professional GSB 18 Repair

So much is being written and talked about “right to repair” these days, that when my 2015 Bosch Professional GSB 18 2Li drill started to smoke, I paid attention to the ease of fixing it.   Here is a brief recap of the experience:

In conclusion, using a 5-level Likert scale rating, I found:

Criteria Finding Rating
Spares catalog accessibility Better than expected 4
Ease of ordering Better than expected 4
Spare availability Normal expectancy 3
Speed of delivery Normal expectancy 3
Packing Normal expectancy 3
Cost of spare Worse than expected 2
Part vs. Sub-assembly Worse than expected 2
Ease of dissassembly Better than expected 4
Ease or repair Better than expected 4
Overall rating  3.2

The main positive was the ease of interaction with the original manufacturer (catalog access, ordering from catalog page, speed of delivery), while the main negative was the lack of availability as the part level and being “forced” to buy a sub-assembly. This creates more waste of resources (money, material) than necessary and is not inline with ecological design. In particular, carbon brushes should be considered consumables (which is what they are since they get physically consumed as your use the machine) and as such, design for their easy swap and procurement be made.
